African music pioneer Papa Wemba has died after collapsing on stage.

The 66-year-old was seen falling mid-song before dancers rushed to his aid.

The Congolese rumba star had been performing at the FEMUA 2016 festival in Ivory Coast when he collapsed in the early hours of Saturday morning.

He died before reaching hospital and the cause of death has not been established.

Wemba, real name Jules Shungu Wembadio Pene Kikumba, inspired a generation of African musicians with his fusion of Latin and African dance styles.

Bands including Zaiko Langa Langa and later Viva La Musica reached audiences across the world.

“Papa Wemba is a golden voice, an artist who has established himself through his work. The proof is that he died on stage,” said the Congolese minister of culture and arts, Baudouin Banza Mukalay Nsungu.

But a career spanning five decades was not without controversy.

In 2003, Wemba spent more than three months in jail after French and Belgian authorities accused him of smuggling people into Europe by claiming they were band or crew members.

U.S. music superstar Prince, whose hits included “Purple Rain” and “Kiss,” was found unresponsive on Thursday at his Minnesota home and was later declared dead, his publicist said. He was 57.

“It is with profound sadness that I am confirming that the legendary, iconic performer, Prince Rogers Nelson has died,” said publicist Anna Meacham.

Celebrity website TMZ, citing sources close to the star, was first to report Prince’s death at the home in Paisley Park, in the Minneapolis suburb of Chanhassen.

There were no immediate details on the cause of death, and the local medical examiner declined to comment.

Prince was an innovative and influential singer and songwriter whose music combined jazz, funk and disco. His hit songs also included “Raspberry Beret” and “Little Red Corvette.”

He first found fame in the late 1970s, and over the next three decades became known as one of the most inventive and eccentric forces in American pop music.

The comedian Victoria Wood, described as “one of the brightest talents of our generation”, has died aged 62 after a short illness.

Her publicist confirmed she had passed away after a “short but brave battle with cancer.”

“The multi-Bafta-award-winning writer, director, actor and comedian died peacefully at her north London home with family this morning. The family ask for privacy at this very sad time,” he said.

Tributes poured in for the actress who rose to fame in the 1980s as one of Britain’s most popular stand-up comics. Her elder brother Chris, 75, said that he was “hugely proud” of his sister, and her death had “robbed us of one of the brightest talents of our generation.”

“It wasn’t just that Victoria was hugely talented in so many different fields, she was also outstanding in her tremendous, single-minded drive and determination to pursue her chosen career. Success did not come easily to Victoria, and it was only after years of struggle that she achieved her well-deserved national acclaim,” he said.

Fellow comedians and actors flocked to pay tribute to the “warm, funny, brilliantly talented” Wood who both Jennifer Saunders and Caitlin Moran cited as an inspiration.
