The Red Planet will soon be closer to Earth than it has been at any point in the last decade.

On May 22, a celestial happening called Mars opposition will occur, which means it will line up with the Sun and Earth.

“Opposition also marks the planet’s closest approach to Earth, so that Mars appears bigger and brighter in the sky than usual,” the European Space Agency wrote .

“This event allows astronomers using telescopes in space and on the ground to see more details on the Martian surface.

“For observers using ground-based instruments the opposing planet is visible throughout the night and is also fully illuminated, making it a great opportunity for detailed studies.”

ESA has released an amazing picture of Mars showing its surface in detail, which you can see published above.

You can see clouds around the planet’s pole, although the ice cap is relatively small because it’s summer on the Red Planet.

Mars should soon be visible to anyone on the surface of Earth, as long as they’re using a telescope, and will appear “bigger and brighter” than usual.
